ERTÉ. [ROMAIN DE TIRTOFF.]
"Rideàu a fond pour la fin du Spectacle." Curtain design for the Broadway production George White's Scandals, 1928. Gouache on paper. 170x242 mm; 6 3/4x9 1/2 inches, on 11x15-inch sheet. Signed in lower right and with artist's manuscript and typed descriptive notes on verso.

Additional Details

Erté's typed note on the verso reads [translation from the French]: "this curtain, which serves as a background for the girls' costumes, is made of black sequins and pearlescent sequins enhanced with rhinestones." The "No. 1361 and G.W.S. 1928" in his hand on the verso indicate the design number for the penultimate year he worked for the famed follies show. White's and Erté's collaboration was a long and amicable one. The artist's spectacular costume and curtain designs combined with Gershwin's music and dancing girls to create one of the longest running and popular revues in theater history.
